I am a Chiropractor in Reno, Nevada and although I agree with most of the advice given in this article to soon to be mothers I would like to add some additional information. Many mothers will experience low back pain and/or sciatica (pain that shoots down one or both legs) during pregnancy. This pain is caused by nerve irritation and more times than not involves a bone in the low back (lumbar vertebrae) or pelvis (sacroiliac joint) being out of place. When a woman becomes pregnant a hormone called "relaxin" is released which causes all of the ligaments in her body to become lax and stretch. This is noticed the most in the pelvis to allow for pelvic expansion so that the baby has room to exit the birth canal. If one of the bones in the low back or pelvis slips out of place during pregnancy then there is a good chance that it will stay that way when the ligaments tighten back up after the hormone relax ceases to be released after child birth. This is why it is a good idea to stretch, exercise, and see your local chiropractor to keep things in line during your pregnancy. Hope this helps.
