This age where everything seems to be highly digital has brought about a lot of conveniences to everyone. Now, when people need to be able to learn about something, do some work related tasks, or even do some leisure activities, they could just do it at the comfort of seating in front of a computer.
Unfortunately, one thing that computers have indirectly brought to us would be neck pain. This is because the postures that we have assumed while seating in front of it are usually not ergonomic and would cause additional strain to our upper back and neck muscles. This additional strain is what leads to neck pain.
Before we can check what we can do about this unfortunate condition known as neck pain, we should first examine what it is. This would help in finding the proper treatments that we should take in order for us to feel better.
What is Neck Pain and what causes it?
Neck pain is basically pain that is felt in the neck area extending towards the shoulders. People feel neck pain mainly because of two reasons. The first is injury and physical trauma, while the other is due to strain caused by unnatural positions and muscular imbalances.
Physical trauma or injury is common for people who are engaged in athletic activities such as going to the gym or playing sports. Twisting your neck, shoulders, and upper back in a very forceful manner could strain the muscles causing miniature tears which would cause pain. Getting hit by an external force would also cause a similar painful sensation.
For people who are not into athletic activities however, one of the more common causes of neck pain is poor posture and muscular imbalance. As mentioned above, sitting in a non-ergonomic fashion could lead to various position defects such as forward head posture or slouching. These two positions (and a variety of others) could strain the muscle and make us feel that tightness and pain.
What are the common treatments for Neck Pain?
When people feel some neck pain their first response would probably be to take some Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or to rub some topical pain relief cream on the painful area. This would work because it would help reduce the inflammation of the muscles which would help people numb the pain and be able to go back to their regular activities.
Unfortunately, these treatments are nothing but temporary cures as they do not truly target the main reason that people are feeling the pain in the first place.
What can I do now to feel better from Neck pain?
To be able to be free from neck pain a few lifestyle changes are in order. For one thing, you should be more aware of the postures that you take as you do your day to day activities. Aside from the aforementioned position while in front of the computer, you should also try to avoid slouching while driving or sitting on a couch.
Another way for you to be able to feel better is to undergo some forms of muscle balance therapy. Through it you would be able to strengthen your neck muscles in a balanced manner that would not strain your neck.
