If your body is feeling down and weary, one of the most common treatments that you would get would be a massage therapy. Many people feel very relaxed once they receive a massage session that they forget about all of their pain and worries. However, many are questioning whether getting a massage when you have back pain is actually good for your body.

As with many things, there are two sides to the story. Some people think that the motions involved in massages would definitely help in soothing the muscles and making you feel really relaxed. On the other hand, there are those that think that the actions done can actually be harmful for people who are suffering from back pain.

Actually, there really are two sides to it. Getting a massage when you have back pain can be helpful in some situations while it could be harmful in others. It is important to know the situations so that you would be able to enjoy the benefits while avoiding those that can cause further damage and back pain.

Here are some of the situations where it would be beneficial for you to get a massage:

Back pain without injury:

If you’re back pain is caused just by a poor sleeping position at home or sitting position at work, an intense physical activity that you were not prepared for (company sporting events), or other activities that did not cause any damage but hurt your back, then getting a massage would be a great idea.

This is because the massage would not increase any injury that you have and would instead just relax and soothe the muscles through the combination of heat and controlled pressure and movements.

As a Recovery or physical therapy:

You could also get a massage to help in your back pain if you have already visited a doctor and they recommended it as an aid to your treatment. This is because after visiting a doctor, they would have already diagnosed your condition and would have had a good idea whether getting a massage would be a cause for you to aggravate your injury.

On the other hand, there are also some instances where it would be better for you to hold off from getting massages when you have back pain:

When you have an unknown cause for the pain:

It would be highly risky for you to get a massage if your back pain is caused by unknown reasons. The pain may be caused by an injury that could be aggravated if you would visit a massage therapist.

To treat an injury:

You can’t expect that a massage therapy session would actually be able to treat your back pain. You should understand that a massage is a relaxing aid and would probably not be able to help in repairing the tears or strains that you have that are actually causing the back pain.

As you can see, it would be important to know your current back pain situation before you would be able to determine if getting a massage treatment when you have back pain is actually beneficial for you.
